A furious couple has reported being charged an exorbitant £688 for a mere two drinks at the infamous DK Oyster restaurant in Mykonos, increasingly known for its poor reviews.
Numerous diners who have visited this swanky dining spot in the Greek resort have taken to TripAdvisor to voice their dissatisfaction over the high prices tagged on their food and beverages. One particular American pair was left highly disgruntled, with their review entitled “avoid at all cost”.
According to them, they were charged $876 – equivalent to £688 – for just two drinks which, they believed, would cost 51 euros (£43) each. The duo only discovered the astronomical charge when they checked their credit card statement upon returning to their home country.
“Total rip-off! Make sure you get a receipt before leaving and check your credit card because they overcharge. Was told beds were free to sit it if we order food or drink,” read the review. “No problem….ordered 2 drinks which we afterwards saw were 51 euros each. If that wasn’t crazy enough we returned to the States and had a $876 charge on our account. FOR 2 DRINKS!!! “, reports the Mirror.
“Attempting to dispute with our credit card company which is also a disaster because we never signed for anything or received a paper copy of a receipt. BEWARE and avoid this place!!” was the furious response given by an unhappy couple, who were caught out at DK Oyster’s establishment.
However, manager Dimitrios Kalamaras took a defensive stand, stating that prices are openly showcased and questioned if the pair would “reconsider some of the harsh expressions used and accusations”.
He outlined: “Our sunbeds come with minimum consumption, so we encourage all visitors to check the menus, before placing their orders. I would like to note that our menus are displayed on blackboards near the entrance, showing the prices of our food and drinks to keep our guests informed.”
Continuing his reply on TripAdvisor, he declared: “If you wish, we can always provide further information about your order. I kindly request that you reconsider some of the harsh expressions used and accusations, as we strive to provide a positive experience for all our guests, and there is no intention on our part to spoil your experience.”
Following similar disputes in the past year, Tripadvisor issued its own “safety warning” on the restaurant’s page.
It stated: “TripAdvisor has been made aware of recent media reports or events concerning this property which may not be reflected in reviews found on this listing. Accordingly, you may wish to perform additional research for information about this property when making your travel plans.”
Oscar Maldonado and his partner were left in shock after being slapped with a 600 euro bill at a Greek restaurant during their sun-soaked getaway from Honduras last year. The couple, who had indulged in two smoothies and lobster pasta without glancing at the menu, were initially presented with a 400 euro charge.
However, upon attempting to settle the bill, they were astounded to find it had surged to 600 euros (£510), with each smoothie priced at an astonishing 60 euros. Oscar, 34, recounted his experience to the Mirror: “I felt tempted to call the police, but I didn’t want to cause any trouble.”
“I said ‘how do you calculate this? ‘ He just went on a rant repeating ‘service fee’. I just paid and left. I was p***ed off for the rest of the day and it almost ruined my holiday. I would never go there. I would never recommend it. I really wasn’t expecting it. I live on a Honduran salary, so going to Europe is especially hard. It was a couple’s trip. It was really frustrating. I cannot think about Mykonos without transporting back to this moment.”
“They were really really nice and the service was really good, they made conversation with us. We ordered non-alcoholic drinks. Just some smoothies. I didn’t ask for the price, then they brought the menu over. It was misleading to say the least. My boyfriend had the lobster pasta. They brought us the biggest lobster, it was a pasta but with the whole part of a lobster. It was a big bit. I thought it may cost a lot, but I never thought that much.”
However, there have also been glowing reviews for the eatery. One satisfied diner gushed this month: “I recently had the pleasure of dining at this fantastic beach restaurant, and it was a great experience! Me and my best friend had two drinks and a free set of sunbeds, for over 4 hours, and afterwards we chose to have a lunch, despite the online comments.”
“The food was delicious, the atmosphere was good, with beautiful views of the sea of Platis Gialos. Also, the music made a positive impression on us. The staff was friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience by the beach! “.
