“MS Dhoni was made a hero by social media and the broadcaster”: Former player agrees with Gautam Gambhir’s allegations

Gautam Gambhir has often accused the social media and the broadcaster of making MS Dhoni a hero after the 2011 World Cup triumph. His allegations have found support from Praveen Kumar, who played cricket with both veterans.

Gambhir is still unhappy that nobody else except Dhoni has the credit for India’s World Cup win. He has spoken about the contribution of Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh in the title-winning campaign. Although Praveen didn’t take a name, he referred to the greatest Indian captain.

“India needs to come out of hero worship culture. Be it in any field, we have to stop worshipping big names. India should matter to everyone. Such narratives are created by social media and the broadcasters,” Gambhir had said.

Parveen agreed with Gambhir. “Gautam bhai is right. Yuvraj Singh took 15 wickets and scored runs. Zaheer Khan took 2 1 wickets. Gautam Gambhir scored runs in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011. Dhoni scored runs in the 2011 final. A team can only win when there are contributions from the batters and bowlers. One player can’t win the trophy for the team,” Kumar told journalist Shubhankar Mishra.

Kumar played 6 Tests, 68 ODIs, and 10 T20Is for India and went on to pick 27, 77, and 8 wickets, respectively.

‘The hero culture has been there in Indian cricket since the 1980s. This is a wrong practice. Cricketers are made bigger than the game. The one who has more brands gets more limelight,” he added.
