Riyan Parag dethrones Virat Kohli from the top spot, gets Orange Cap

Rajasthan Royals’ youngster Riyan Parag scored 54 not out against Mumbai on April 1 at the Wankhede Stadium. He hit the second consecutive fifty in the Indian Premier League 2024 and climbed to the top spot in the run-scorers list, taking the Orange Cap away from his idol Virat Kohli.

Parag revealed that he has made a few changes to his approach and that the results are now coming out. In IPL 2023, he managed just 78 runs from 7 matches and was slammed for his below-par performance. Parag proved his doubters wrong with the new No.4 batting slot in the side.

“I have realized that things should be kept himself. I have stopped trying too much and is focusing on the process. Earlier, when I was failing, I used to overthink and try out different things. This year, I am keeping things simple,” he said after the game against MI.

“The number 4 batting slot allows me to be myself as I play similarly for Assam in domestic cricket. When Jos Buttler and R Ashwin got out, I thought of doing the same thing I would have done for my state. It was a calculative approach,” Riyan further added.

Riyan admitted that he was not performing up to the standards in the previous seasons, and he realized that he wasn’t practicing correctly for IPL.

“I was not performing in IPL for three or four years. Whenever I went back to the hotel room, I was thinking about the reasons behind my failures and what I am suppose to do to come out of it. I realized I wasn’t practising at this level so I went back and corrected the things. I practice against the type of balls bowlers bowled in IPL and at the highest level,” he added.

Parag now has 181 runs from 3 matches at an average of 181.00.
