Rohit Sharma seeks clarity on T20 World Cup future in meeting with BCCI: Reports

Amidst discussions about the T20I future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, recent reports shed light on Rohit’s inquiry during a BCCI meeting in Delhi. With the T20 World Cup 2024 approaching, speculation arises on whether the veteran duo will lead or if emerging talents will take charge to end India’s ICC trophy drought.

In the meeting, held to finalize the South Africa tour squad and review ODI World Cup 2023 performance, Rohit, via Zoom from London, sought confirmation on his role in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Key BCCI officials, including Secretary Jay Shah, Vice President Rajeev Shukla, Treasurer Ashish Shelar, Head Coach Rahul Dravid, and selectors, unanimously supported Rohit as the ideal T20 World Cup 2024 captain. They proposed he take charge from the South Africa tour onwards, but Rohit requested a break from the white-ball leg after a demanding World Cup campaign.

The uncertainty surrounding Hardik Pandya’s fitness influenced the decision to continue with Rohit in T20Is. Rohit and Kohli have not played T20Is since the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final defeat. Pandya’s ankle injury in the ODI World Cup 2023 raised questions about his T20 World Cup 2024 availability, leading selectors to offer the leadership role back to Rohit.

The BCCI and NCA devised an 18-week program for Pandya’s T20 World Cup readiness. With only six T20Is left before the mega event, India aims to finalize their playing combination in the upcoming series.
