‘This is largely about religious sentiments, not when women are hit or…’

Actor-director Konkona Sensharma was recently in a conversation with Hindustan Times where she spoke about the choices she has made as an actor on OTT and in films and the censorship that has now come into play in the digital space.

She said, “This censorship is largely about respecting religious sentiments. I don’t think it is there for misogyny, how much one can show. Women are hit, violence is inflicted (in web projects), but sadly not much censorship is there. There is a lot of censorship when it comes to religion. We have to think ourselves how good or bad that is.”

On being a director more frequently

I am definitely open to the idea. I am trying to develop a series. It is not easy to pull off, it takes so much time for so many things to come together. It will be a comedy, i don’t know if platforms will like it, whether we will get the budgets we need. That remains to be answered. I am also developing a feature film. I am not in a hurry. If I am able to write something which is good, and raise funds for it, then I will definitely make it.

On Animal movie

In an interview with ANI, the actor said, “I don’t have a problem with depicting violence on screen as long as there is very good reason for it. Even sex. I don’t have a problem with viewing sex but I don’t want to be there just for the sake of it. I don’t want to see violence just for the sake of it. I don’t want to see sex for the sake of it.”

“There has to be a reason why it’s there in the film because it connects to the characters or it connects to the plot, or whatever it has to justify itself. That is one thing, why is it there? What is the intent of the director?”

“From what I understand and I may be mistaken, I’ve not watched ‘Animal’ because I don’t feel it’s my kind of film. I haven’t been drawn to the film even from the reviews and things. Also, I’m aware of his previous work and he stands by that work, the director and where a certain violence has been made acceptable in relationships and that is not what I stand for. Now, if it’s done very well. I don’t mind watching it,” Konkona said.
