What can happen to Gulbadin Naib amid fake injury allegations in ICC T20 World Cup 2024

Gulbadin Naib is under the scanner even as Afghanistan created history by qualifying for the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. His fake injury during the AFG vs BAN match at the Arnos Vale Ground in St Vicent on June 25, Tuesday has been lambasted by former players. Gulbadin was accused of time-wasting. The incident happened just before the downpour started. Bangladesh were 81 for 7 and 2 runs behind the DLS score.

Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott signalled the players to slow things down as it was raining. Naib, who was standing in the slip, fell on the ground. Even skipper Rashid Khan was taken aback.

A section of fans and the Afghan players mocked the all-rounder. Gulbadin was seen dancing and running after Afghanistan’s win. There is a possibility of the player facing action for his antics.

Under the ICC Code of Conduct, time-wasting is a Level One or Level Two offence. If the umpires report the incident to the match referee, Gulbadin could be fined 100 percent of his match fees or get two suspension points.

Rashid defended Gulbadin and said that it did not make a lot of difference.

“He had some cramp. We didn’t lose any overs. All the players were back on the field in five minutes. His injury didn’t make any difference. He was injured and needed some attention, ” Rashid said.
