Former India player Sunil Gavaskar doesn’t see Rohit Sharma batting in the middle order to keep KL Rahul as one of the openers in the second Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. He said form doesn’t matter when it is about a player like Rohit. The 38-year-old scored just 91 runs in six innings against New Zealand. In the series prior to that, he failed against Bangladesh.
The only innings he played against the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra was also below-par. There are speculations that Rohit might bat at the No.6 slot to allow Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal to open the batting. The two added 201 runs for the first wicket in the Perth Test.
However, Gavaskar is not in favour of the move. He wants Rohit to take his slot back from KL in the pink-ball Test.
“Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal will miss out, with Rohit and Shubman Gill returning to the Playing XI. Rohit will open the innings and Rahul will be sent back to no.6. Gill will bat at no.3.
“I don’t see Rohit batting in the middle. He is a class player and form doesn’t matter when it is about him. He can straight away score a century in the second match. The team management might want to look at Washington Sundar. Ravichandran Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja could be tried in his place. This is the only area where there is a possibility of a change,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
India have taken a 1-0 lead following their 295-run win in the series opener at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
