IPL 2024: Champions Chennai Super Kings aim for MS Dhoni’s Midas touch

Chennai Super Kings come into the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League aiming for another perfect campaign. CSK will face RCB in the IPL 2024 opener on March 22. CSK have won the coveted IPL trophy three times in the last six seasons, besides picking up their fifth title in 2023. By winning the 2024 edition, CSK could surpass Mumbai Indians in terms of trophies won. Who better than their veteran leader, MS Dhoni, to guide them to a successful campaign?

CSK have one of the best balanced squads in the IPL with each bases covered. CSK suffered a blow as star opener Devon Conway got ruled out until May, which means he will miss the season due to injury. He scored a whopping 672 runs last season. CSK will hope to find an option from their available squad to replace the Kiwi southpaw. Be it Indian players or foreign recruits, the might of CSK is amazing. Dhoni, who is set to feature in his 15th season, will be keen to showcase his mettle as a leader.

In the IPL 2024 auction, CSK released Ben Stokes as Ambati Rayudu also retired. Replacements in the form of Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra came in. Uncapped Sameer Rizvi of UP was roped in for a massive sum as well. The bowling of CSK received a boost with seasoned pacers coming in. CSK has their core intact, and each player gets about his role almost perfectly. So, one expects to see a near-perfect campaign with elevated performances.

Chennai Super Kings squad for the IPL 2024 season

MS Dhoni (captain & wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ajinkya Rahane, Deepak Chahar, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Maheesh Theekshana, Mitchell Santner, Matheesha Pathirana, Tushar Deshpande, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Mukesh Choudhary, Simarjeet Singh, Shaik Rasheed, Nishant Sindhu, Prashant Solanki, Ajay Mandal, Rachin Ravindra, Shardul Thakur, Daryl Mitchell, Sameer Rizvi, Avanish Rao Aravelly, and Mustafizur Rahman.

What are the strengths?

MS Dhoni is CSK’s biggest strength. He knows how to get the best out of everyone and the trust he has over his side speaks volumes. With 133 wins and 91 defeats as skipper, Dhoni is the only player to have led 226 times in the IPL (including one season for Rising Pune Supergiants).

Ruturaj Gaikwad holds the card in the opening department and is one of the most consistent players in recent times. He scored 635 runs in IPL 2021 and 590 last season. With Conway unavailable, he will aim to strike a combination with Rachin Ravindra if CSK opt for a direct replacement for Conway with a foreign player. Among Indian players, Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube have been solid acts. Both contributed immensely last season. Dube can be a serious asset once again as he fits into the system so well. He has found a new lease of life here.

CSK’s all-rounders are world-class. Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner lend their voices as seasoned spinners who can score heavily at the death. Moeen Ali and Daryl Mitchell can chip in. It’s an experienced set of internationals who are match-winners. 19-year-old Nishant Sindhu is a promising figure. He owns 231 runs and 11 scalps in the shortest format.

CSK’s bowling is well covered, and the team is spoilt by choices. In the pace department, Deepak Chahar can be lethal with his new-ball exploits. Mukesh Chowdhary had a dream debut campaign and will want to mark a return after missing IPL 2023. Shardul Thakur, who earlier played for CSK returns to the side after some years elsewhere. Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana and last campaign’s star, Tushar Deshpande, add more depth. Also, CSK brought in Mustafizur Rahman, who owns 300 international wickets for Bangladesh. His experience in the IPL will prove to be handy.

CSK have an able bench in this department. Simarjeet Singh averages 22.35 in the 20-over format.

In terms of spinners, Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana has made his presence felt with 23 scalps from the last two seasons. Jadeja and Santner, with 193 wickets in the 20-over format, bring stability alongside Jadeja, who owns 216 scalps and over 3300 runs. Moeen is another spinner in the ranks. He picked nine scalps last season.

What are the weaknesses?

CSK hardly have a notable weakness. Everything seems so perfectly poised for them. It’s their depth that makes them so sought after. One slight weakness could be Conway’s absence, as it disrupts a well-settled opening combination. Both Ruturaj and Conway had such a solid understanding. Young Ravindra had a dream ICC ODI World Cup in India last year and he has big steps to fill in. However, we all know his special talent. Rahane could be another option to walk in as an opener. He did so earlier for the Royals.

Probable playing XI of CSK

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rachin Ravindra, Moeen Ali, Ajinkya Rahane, Daryl Mitchell, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c and wk), Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande.

Who can be CSK’s impact players?

With the Impact Player rule, teams can name five substitutes and use one of them when needed. If four foreign players are already named in the XI, the impact player can only be an Indian. CSK can go with several options. When they bat, they can name a pacer less and then swap someone like a Ravindra for Mukesh Choudhary. CSK can go in with three foreigners if they bowl first and then get in someone like Ravindra or Mitchell when they bat. Impact players: Rachin Ravindra, Shardul Thakur, Mukesh Choudhary, Sameer Rizvi.

Players to watch out for

In 16 matches last season, Dube scored an impressive 418 runs. He averaged 38 and struck at 158.33. He can get the scorecard moving nicely and an ability to find the big shots will help CSK massively.

Deepak Chahar can be a menace with the new ball. He owns 53 wickets in the powerplay at 29.18. Chahar, with all his experience, can prove to be the match-winner.
