Maybach’s Take On The Mercedes SL Roadster Keeps Chrome Bits Under Cover In First Spy Shots

  • Prototype Mercedes-Maybach SL makes its spy debut during hot weather testing.
  • The most luxurious version of the SL was announced two years ago with a teaser.
  • The model is expected to offer higher levels of luxury compared to the AMG twin, together with mild exterior tweaks.

The latest generation of the Mercedes-AMG SL debuted in 2021 as the roadster alter-ego of the AMG GT sportscar, but its range keeps expanding. After serving as a base for the exotic AMG Mythos speedster, the SL is ready to receive the Maybach treatment for those looking for a higher level of luxury.

The Mercedes-Maybach SL appeared in an official teaser in May 2022, showing a portion of its front end. More than two years later, our spy photographers caught what appears to be the first lightly camouflaged prototype during hot weather testing in Europe.

The prototype shares most of its bodywork with the regular SL, but the front end is covered, likely hiding the Maybach-specific updates. The teaser suggests that changes will include a shiny grille, a pattern with the Maybach logo on the hood, and the traditional Mercedes ornament.

The prototype features dual trapezoidal exhaust pipes, a signature of Maybach models. Note that the four-cylinder SL has quadruple round tailpipes, while the V8-powered models (including the flagship E Performance hybrid) sport an equal number of trapezoidal tailpipes. We also expect different alloy wheels and more chromework around the body.

SH Proshots

The most important changes will occur inside the cabin, where Maybach will offer more exquisite materials and a higher degree of personalization options. This will include a greater variety of colors compared to the optional Mercedes Manufaktur label, justifying the premium price tag of the Maybach-branded SL. The pictured prototype features red interior upholstery, matching the color of the retractable roof.

At the moment, we can’t be sure about what lies under the hood of the Mercedes-Maybach SL. However, we can speculate that the model will inherit the most powerful powertrain options of the Mercedes-AMG SL.

As for the possibility of a 12-cylinder engine, this sounds unlikely, as even the rival Bentley Continental GTC Speed recently transitioned to an electrified V8 setup. Note that the flagship Mercedes-AMG S63 S E Performance PHEV produces a combined 805 hp (600 kW / 816 PS) and 1,047 lb-ft (1,420 Nm) of torque, which sounds more than enough for a luxury roadster.

While we don’t have a debut date for the Mercedes-Maybach SL, we wouldn’t be surprised if the model arrives at showrooms in 2025. Until then, you can check out the speculative renderings we created, based on the earlier teasers.

Note: These independent renderings are off-the-record and unrelated to Mercedes or Maybach.
