  • The Proton e.MAS 7 has made its debut in Malaysia as the automaker’s first EV.
  • The SUV is a twin to the Geely Galaxy E5 and it’s fitted with a 215-hp motor.
  • The compact e.MAS 7 offers 410 km range, competitive pricing, and stylish color options.

Malaysian automaker Proton has unveiled its first-ever production EV, called the e.MAS 7. The SUV is a rebadged version of the Geely Galaxy E5, inheriting more than a few Porsche-inspired styling cues from its Chinese twin.

The Proton e.MAS 7 is a compact SUV measuring 4,615 mm (181.7 inches) long with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm (108.3 inches). The exterior and interior design are identical to the Geely Galaxy E5, setting aside the different emblems and the lack of an illuminated grille.

The full-width LED taillights, the shape of the greenhouse, and the surfacing are similar to the Porsche Cayenne, while the available Quartz Rose shade looks suspiciously similar to the Provence debut color of the Porsche Macan EV. The color palette of the Malaysian EV also includes Platinum Silver, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, and Lithium White combined with an Indigo Blue interior.

Of course, the Geely Galaxy E5 / Proton e.MAS 7 models are not the only Chinese-derived EVs with strong Porsche references in their design. The taillights of the BYD Han sedan and Song L crossover look heavily inspired by the Porsche Panamera and Cayenne Coupe, as is the case with Geely’s own Galaxy E8 sedan.

Back to Proton, the e.MAS 7 shares its underpinnings and specifications with its Geely twin. It rides on the Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) and is fitted with a single front-mounted electric motor producing 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. The 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint is completed in 6.9 seconds, making it the quickest Proton to date.

There are two options for the battery pack with a capacity of 49.52 kWh or 60.22 kWh, allowing WLTP ranges of 345 km (214 miles) or 410 km (255 miles) respectively. As reported by Paultan, Proton claims that the battery retains a health status of 90.5% after 921 complete cycles, which is the equivalent of 400,000 km (~250,000 miles)

The Proton e.MAS 7 is available in the Malaysian market, priced between RM109,800-123,800 ($24,400-27,500). This makes it a lot cheaper compared to its main rival – the BYD Atto 3 – which starts at RM149,800 ($33,259) and is currently the best-selling EV in Malaysia.
