The 2024 European Beach Index has ranked ten popular European beaches based on factors such as the sea and air temperature, five-star reviews, average daily costs and the height of the waves.

Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa, Cyprus came out on top – known for its sparkling turquoise waters, golden sands, warm sea and air temperatures.

This ultimate beach destination has been awarded the Blue Flag for cleanliness and offers a budget-friendly daily cost of £87.30, which includes all you’d need for a day trip such as meals, transport, and even overnight accommodation.

Malta’s Mellieha Bay Beach is second on the list, offering crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling and swimming.

Portoroz Beach in Slovenia is a hidden gem in Europe. This destination made the top three due to its combination of low costs, warm sea temperatures, and gentle waves, making it a safer beach for young children.

The Greek Islands are incredibly popular with tourists, and amongst the vast selection of beautiful beaches, Elafonissi Beach in Crete is one of the most popular in Greece, ranking fourth on the list.

Nissi Beach, the winner, is comprised of two connected stretches of golden sand – one offers a lively atmosphere while the other provides a quieter retreat.

The crystal-clear waters are shallow enough to walk out for up to a hundred metres, with numerous sand bars scattered throughout.

‘Nissi’ translates to ‘small island’ in Greek – there’s a small island accessible by foot through the shallow water during summer, and even without wetting your feet in spring.

The beach is about a 30-minute stroll from the town centre, but it’s also serviced by buses, taxis, and ample car parking.

During the peak months, expect a lively atmosphere with loud music played from the numerous bars and clubs located near the seafront.

If you’re looking for a more relaxing holiday, winter temperatures can reach up to 25 degrees so visiting Nissi Beach in winter is peaceful and calm.
