“Australia to last long for three sessions, Steve Smith will play Virat Kohli’s like role”: Matthew Hayden predicts outcome of fourth day of Perth Test

Australia are 12/3 while chasing 534 runs in the fourth innings of the first Test against India in Perth. Former Australian Matthew Hayden spoke about the two possible outcomes on Day 4 of the contest.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (161) and Virat Kohli (100 not out) took India’s total to 487/6 declare before captain Jasprit Bumrah (2 wickets) and Mohammed Siraj (1 wicket) took Australia on the back foot in the last few overs of the day.

“I am hoping Australia will last long for three sessions. But if Steve Smith played a Virat Kohli-like role for the team, the game would go to the fifth day. I want at least three Tests to go to five days in this series.

“It is a long series, and the dominance will swing from one team to another. Australia will have their days while India will also dominate in some days,” Matthew Hayden said.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar also gave his prediction. “India are going to win the first Test. I think Australia will survive until tea,” he said.

The ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 consists of five Test matches, and the India National Cricket Team needs to win by 4-0 to qualify for the World Test Champions Final.
