Aakash Chopra has given his verdict on the new captain of Delhi Capitals for IPL 2025. Axar Patel was the vice-captain in the previous season and was retained by the franchise. However, the team bought the former captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), KL Rahul, in the mega auction for INR 14 crore. He is also in contention to lead the team in the 18th season.
Aakash is in favor of Axar and not Rahul. He mentioned that the all-rounder has been a consistent performer for the franchise and should lead the side.
Axar was retained for INR 16.50 crore while captain Rishabh Pant was released.
“Who should be the captain? Their situation is similar to KKR. It could be Axar, and I want him to lead the side. He is underrated, and If I had to make a decision. I would go with the spinner. He will run the team well and command respect,” Aakash Chopra said.
For Aakash, Axar is a better option than Faf du Plessis and Rahul.
“KL Rahul is the second option while Faf du Plessis being the third. Faf might warm the bench in the early matches because they ued the Right To Match card for Jake Fraser-McGurk. The competition is between Axar Patel and KL Rahul but I would give my vote Axar because of his consistent performances for the team.”
Chopra feels Axar would be eager to prove himself as he hasn’t been treated well by the franchise and the Indian team. He feels Axar has been underutilized by Delhi in the batting department, and the same is the case with India. He was not given a chance the Playing XI in the home Test matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand
