BCCI punishes Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur

Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been fined 10% of her match fee. She was penalized for showing dissent at the on field umpire’s decision for maintaining slow over-rate during the WPL 2025 match against UP Warriorz. The match took place at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on March 6.

Harmanpreet was unhappy with the decision. Before the final over of the first innings, officials informed her about the slow over-rate due to which MI had to bring an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle. She was discussing this with the umpires when UPW batter Sophie Ecclestone joined in.

Harmanpreet did not like Ecclestone’s involvement. She gestured her to return to the crease. Ecclestone responded, but the umpires stepped in to separate the two.

Despite the fielding restriction, UPW scored only seven runs in the final over. They finished with a total of 150 runs. MI chased the target, with six wickets in hand. This victory helped them move to second place in the points table.

‘Harmanpreet Kaur accepted the Level 1 offence under Article 2.8’ – WPL Officials

The WPL released a statement on March 7. It confirmed that Harmanpreet was fined for showing dissent at the umpire’s decision. The fine was not related to her exchange with Ecclestone.

“Harmanpreet Kaur accepted the Level 1 offence under Article 2.8, which concerns showing dissent towards an umpire’s decision during a match. For Level 1 violations, the Match Referee’s decision is final and cannot be challenged,” the statement read (via Wisden).

Harmanpreet and Ecclestone met again in the second innings. Harmanpreet batted at No. 4. She played three deliveries from Ecclestone, scoring singles in the 16th over.

After the match, Harmanpreet lauded her team. She discussed how MI stayed strong and took chances.

“They played well. We struggled to take advantage of the conditions in the first six overs. We just needed one wicket to turn things around. The opportunity came at the right moment. I’m really happy with our performance,” she said during the post-match presentation (via Cricbuzz).

MI will face Gujarat Giants (GG) on March 10. The WPL 2025 will now move to Mumbai.
