Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made headlines at the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai by acquiring Daryl Mitchell for a hefty ₹14 crore. However, former India pacer RP Singh suggests that Mitchell might not even find a spot in the playing XI if he doesn’t fit into the team’s dynamics.
During a discussion on JioCinema, cricket pundit Parthiv Patel speculated that CSK might have picked Rachin Ravindra as a cover for Devon Conway. He raised doubts about Mitchell’s playing time. RP Singh echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that CSK is not a team that structures its lineup around a high-priced player.
“Some teams build their squad around a high-priced player, but CSK isn’t one of them. They’ve invested ₹14 crore in Daryl Mitchell, but if he doesn’t fit into their XI, they might not field him throughout the season,” RP Singh said.
Singh drew a parallel with the situation involving Ben Stokes in the previous year. Despite acquiring Stokes for a staggering ₹16.25 crore in the IPL 2023 auction, CSK played him in only two games.
“Last year, we witnessed a similar situation with Ben Stokes. This highlights the advantage of captaincy, where even if a player is crucial, they must wait if there’s no available spot for them.” Singh stated.
This strategic approach aligns with CSK’s commitment to building a balanced and performance-driven team rather than relying solely on the price tag of a player.
As the IPL 2024 season unfolds, the fate of Daryl Mitchell in the CSK playing XI remains uncertain.
Daryl Mitchell has had a wonderful ICC World Cup 2023 in India:
Daryl Mitchell has showcased an exceptional performance during the ICC World Cup 2023 held in India. He had scored two centuries and two half-centuries in the campaign. Interestingly, he scored both of his World Cup centuries against India, becoming only the second player after Ricky Ponting to achieve this feat.
