Former Team India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin will soon have a street named in his honor. Ashwin retired from international cricket after the third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Gabba in Brisbane.
Ashwin had an illustrious career, claiming 765 wickets across all formats, second only to Anil Kumble, who holds 953 wickets among Indian cricketers. In addition to his bowling prowess, Ashwin was a valuable lower-order batsman in Test cricket, scoring six centuries, three of which were achieved at his home ground in Chennai.
On Friday, March 21, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) announced that Ashwin’s residential street, Ramakrishnapuram Ist Street in West Mambalam, will be renamed in his honor. A proposal had been made to rename either his current street or Arya Gowda Road, and after a review, the decision was made to choose the former. A naming ceremony is expected to take place soon.

Ashwin has returned to the franchise where his IPL journey began, Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He made his IPL debut in 2010 and played a crucial role in their title win that year and the following season. After CSK’s ban from 2016 onwards, Ashwin represented the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals.
The Tamil Nadu-based franchise has secured Ashwin for a sum of 79.75 crores, fending off competition from Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals, Lucknow Super Giants, and Punjab Kings to bring him back to CSK. With 90 wickets to his name, Ashwin will be eager to achieve the milestone of 100 wickets this season, etching his name further into CSK’s history.
