David Warner praises Steve Smith, Ravi Shastri adds Virat Kohli’s name to the conversation

Steve Smith has been out of form for a long time and is finding it hard to middle the ball. The right-handed batter was shifted to open the innings after David Warner retired from Test cricket, but the move didn’t produce impressive results. He was brought back to his No.4 slot for the five-Test series against India, and the first three outings have been ordinary.

Warner, who is donning the hat of a commentator, lauded the player for his form in the nets. “I had a word with the Australia batting coach, and he told me that Smith is middling the ball in the nets but he cannot do it in the match and it can happen with anyone. Michael Hussey once told us that batting well in the nets doesn’t mean you will have a good time in the middle. Steve Smith is a good player and I am sure he will score runs sooner than later,” David Warner said on Star Sports.

Ravi Shastri, who was sitting in the box, brought Virat Kohli’s name to the conversation. “Smith is a big player, and once he gets one big score, the purple patch will return for a few games. He is due for a long sore, and I am expecting him to score runs in this series. Even Virat Kohli will have a good time with the bat, and he is going to put up good numbers in the remaining matches,” he said.

Kohli scored a hundred in the second innings of the Perth Test but the other three outings were failures.
