“Distant Dream”: Sanjay Manjrekar on India’s chances of beating Australia 4-0 to qualify for WTC Final

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar said that India shouldn’t think about beating Australia 4-0 to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. The visiting team will play a five-Test series down under from November 22.

India were recently beaten 0-3 by New Zealand and need a miracle to go past Australia without facing a defeat. Manjrekar mentioned that India should think about one contest at a time instead of giving importance to other matches. He also spoke about the significance of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the batting order.

“4-0 is a distant dream, and the team should take one step at a time, concentrate on the Perth Test, and then think about Adelaide. We need Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and one of them should have a great series. The bowling unit, which was India’s strength in the last couple of years, has lost its shine with no Mohammed Shami in the team,” Manjrekar said on Star Sports.

In 2024, Virat has amassed 250 runs from six Tests at an average of 22.72, including just one half-century. On the other hand, skipper Rohit has accumulated 588 runs from 21 innings at an average of 29.40 with two hundreds and as many fifties. In the five Test matches of the recently concluded home season, Sharma managed just 133 runs at an average of 13.30 with one fifty.

The duo will be eager to return to form against Australia as India aim to keep their hopes of the WTC Final alive. Kohli has scored 1352 runs from 13 red-ball games at an average of 54.08 in Australia.
