Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik spoke about how his Test career ended unexpectedly at Lord’s during the 2018 England tour. He was dismissed for just 1 and 0 in the first and second innings, respectively, as India suffered a heavy defeat by an innings and 159 runs, allowing England to take a 2-0 series lead.
Karthik made his return to the Test team after eight years in 2018. In his comeback match against Afghanistan at home, he was run out for 4, prior to being picked for the England tour. During an appearance on the Sky Sports Podcast, former England captain Nasser Hussain discussed how he told Duncan Fletcher about his decision to retire after the Lord’s Test against New Zealand in 2004, capping off his career with a century at the historic ground.
Karthik mentioned that, similar to Hussain, his Test career also concluded at Lord’s. However, unlike Hussain, he had no control when it ended.
“Nasser ended his career at Lord’s in 2004, and I did too. The only difference was that he went and knocked on the coach’s door, saying, ‘I think I’m done.’ In my case, the coach (Shastri) told me, ‘Don’t bother coming for the next Test, I think you’re done,” “Dinesh Karthik said.
Dinesh Karthik continued his career in first-class cricket, with his final appearance in the format coming for Tamil Nadu during the 2020 Ranji Trophy.
