England’s selection dilemma: Ollie Robinson and Ben Stokes could swing the game in their favor in fourth Test against India

England’s bowling attack for the crucial fourth Test in Ranchi could receive a significant boost with the potential return of pace bowler Ollie Robinson. With the series at 2-1 in India’s favour, England are carefully weighing their choices to ensure they strike the right balance in their bowling attack.

The potential inclusion of Ollie Robinson has garnered significant attention, with the talented seamer set to make his first appearance on the tour. His previous Test outing was against Australia at Headingley during the Ashes. Boasting 76 wickets at an impressive average of 22.21 in just 19 Tests, Robinson brings a wealth of experience to the table.

England might rest veteran bowler James Anderson for the fourth Test. This opens the door for Ollie Robinson, whose wicket-taking skills on tricky pitches could swing the game in England’s favour.

Furthermore, the possible return of Ben Stokes as a seam-bowling all-rounder has added another layer of intrigue to England’s selection dilemma. Stokes, a proven match-winner with both bat and ball, could provide the team with added depth and versatility in their bowling arsenal. If Stokes becomes England’s second pacer, they could opt for Shoaib Bashir.

However, the prospect of Stokes resuming his bowling duties has been met with cautious optimism, as the all-rounder continues his recovery from left knee surgery. His determination to contribute with the ball once again has been evident in his recent training sessions and has generated considerable excitement within the England camp.

“He mentioned the possibility but hasn’t confirmed it even in the changing room, so let’s wait and see. He practiced bowling against the batters today. We’ll observe how he feels afterwards, and if all goes well, we might witness him bowling in the actual game,” England vice-captain Ollie Pope said ahead of the fourth Test.

Discussing the matter on Monday, McCullum stated that he would take on the responsibility of restraining Stokes if he sensed he was pushing his recovery too rapidly.

“Once he’s in the groove, it’s quite challenging to make him stop bowling, honestly. However, I’ll have a conversation with him before the game, and inquire if he requires any intervention from my end. If he’s fully confident in his knee and follows the medical advice, you have to trust his judgment. That’s crucial, and if he seeks guidance on the field, I’ll be there as someone he can rely on,” he said.

As the anticipation builds ahead of the crucial fourth Test, all eyes are on Ollie Robinson and Ben Stokes, whose potential roles in the team could have a significant impact on the outcome of the match.

With England carefully considering their bowling options to counter India’s formidable lineup, the stage is set for a thrilling battle between bat and ball in Ranchi.
