Faf du Plessis will lead Royal Challengers Bangalore during the season’s opening match against Chennai Super Kings on March 22. Faf was with CSK for years before joining the Bangalore-based team. He was appointed as captain in his first season as Virat Kohli had left the post. The rivalry between the two teams is enjoyed by millions, with players also joining the batters.
Days ahead of the game, Faf has opened up about his admiration for Dhoni. Faf joined CSK in 2012 and was with the Yellow Army until 2021. The South African batter played 92 matches for CSK and scored 2700 runs. Du Plessis was released by the team ahead of the mega auction in 2022, and RCB added him to their unit.
Faf admitted that Dhoni has had an impact on him. “Dhoni is the greatest captain ever and I am lucky that I was with him for years. He has been the biggest thing in my career and he is behind making me a good skipper. Just watching him and Stephen Fleming from the close range as a young leader was special to my growth,” Du Plessis said.
“I am thankful to MS Dhoni for teaching me the skills and qualities of a leader. He is like my big brother. You want to beat him, but in reality, you don’t want that to happen because there is so much respect for him.
“But when you go on the field, the match between RCB and CSK is always special. The match is very important because two Indian cricket icons, Virat Kohli and Dhoni, will be up against each other. RCB is loved because of Virat Kohli. I am lucky to play with both,” he added.
