Former England cricket captain Kevin Pietersen praised Indian star Virat Kohli’s fitness and performance, crediting him with inspiring young Indian players. After Kohli led the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to victory against the Punjab Kings with a match-winning knock of 77 runs off 49 balls, Pietersen lauded Kohli’s innings for securing his side’s first win of the season in their maiden home game at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Pietersen believes Kohli’s dedication to fitness has set an example for young cricketers in India.
Commenting on Star Sports, Pietersen said that Kohli’s performance against Punjab Kings exemplified his passion and flair for the game.
“One of the most memorable aspects of his career that players and fans alike will cherish is his ability to close out matches as one of the greatest finishers of all time. Beyond his feats on the field, he has also left a lasting legacy off the field by pushing Indian cricketers to become true athletes. He not only talked about the importance of fitness and athleticism but also led by example, embodying the athleticism he preached.”
Pietersen praised Kohli’s fitness regimen, which he believes young cricketers should emulate.
“His unmatched commitment, boundless energy, and intense desire to be the best make him the finest player on the field. His excellence starts with his strict diet and fitness regimen, along with the sacrifices he has made. When you set high expectations, you must back them up through hard work and actions. He leads by example, inspiring other players to follow in his footsteps. The dramatic turnaround in Indian cricket is a testament to his dedication and achievement.” the former England skipper continued.
On the matchday, RCB won the toss and opted to bowl. The RCB bowling unit was at its peak form as they restricted the Punjab Kings to 176 runs. After the quick dismissals of Faf du Plessis and Cameron Green, the home side was in a tricky situation.
Kohli gave his team the momentum they desperately needed. This was followed by a spectacular finish from wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, whose explosive 10-ball 28 sealed the win.
RCB look to extend their winning streak as they face KKR on March 29.
