Washington Sundar made his Gujarat Titans debut against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League 2025. He didn’t get a chance to bowl as Mohammed Siraj (4 wickets), Prasidh Krishna (2 wickets) and Sai Kishore) did the damage and restricted the hosts to 152/8 in 20 overs. However, it was not all over for Sundar as he was promoted to the No.4 slot with the Titans in trouble, having lost two wickets with just 16 runs on the board.
He changed the complexion of the game by hitting Simarjeet Singh for 20 runs in one over. The southpaw scored 49 runs off 23 balls, with the help of 5 fours and 2 sixes.
He added 90 runs with captain Shubman Gill for the third wicket, with the latter accumulating an unbeaten 61 runs off 43 balls. He hit 9 fours in his knock. Former player Sanjay Manjrekar recalled Gautam Gambhir’s role in Washington Sundar’s career.
The all-rounder was not a part of the Indian team but was added to the squad for the second Test against New Zealand last year. He impressed everyone with his performances in the two games and also played three Tests on the tour of Australia.
The 25-year-old was given a chance in the ODI series and T20I matches against England. He traveled with the Men in Blue to Dubai for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but didn’t get a game. Gambhir has kept him in his plans for all the formats of the game.
“Gambhir brought him back and played him with R Ashwin. His role in IPL and Team India is similar. He batted well against Sunrisers, and even a player like Gill took a back seat. He was the only player in the match who played shots on low bounce. Washy showed his class along with Gill,” he said.
