Gary Kirsten ready to coach Pakistan again but lays out one condition

Gary Kirsten has discussed the reasons behind his resignation as Pakistan’s head coach, revealing that while he is open to a potential return, it would only be under the right conditions and free from external interference. Kirsten assumed the role in April 2024, joining forces with Jason Gillespie, who was brought in as the head coach for the Test team.

However, after only six months in the position, Kirsten resigned, citing escalating tensions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as the primary reason for his departure. Both he and Gillespie were also removed from the selection panel, and Kirsten left tours to Australia and Zimbabwe.

In an interview with Wisden, Kirsten reflected on the turbulent few months. He quickly realised that his ability to influence the team was limited once he was removed from the selection process.

“It was a challenging few months. I quickly realized that I wouldn’t have much impact. Once I was removed from selection duties and tasked with leading a team, it became tough as a coach to make any meaningful difference,” Kirsten explained.

He also indicated that he would consider returning to coach Pakistan in the future, but only if the circumstances were right ensuring a lack of outside interference and allowing him to work effectively with the players.

“If I were asked to return to Pakistan, I would, but it would be for the players, and and I would want to go under the right circumstances,” he added.
