“He is my captain”: Sunil Gavaskar wants Shubman Gill to prove him wrong in England Test series

Shubman Gill is Team India’s new Test captain, leading the team in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. Former player Sunil Gavaskar is not satisfied with the batter’s choice of batting at the No.4 slot, a place previously occupied by now-retired Virat Kohli. The right-handed batter has opened the innings for a long time before sacrificing his place for Yashasvi Jaiswal. He then shifted to No.3 in the longest format, and after settling down, the 25-year-old decided to go for another change after becoming the leader.

“He shouldn’t be batting at No.4 as I feel No.3 best suits him. Gill has played as an opener, and you want a player like him to take the No.3 slot. However, he has taken this decision as a captain. He is my captain, and he is the captain of India. We should back him,” he said.

“I want him to score a hundred and prove me wrong. I would love to be proven wrong by him,” he added.

Meanwhile, Jaiswal scored a well-compiled hundred (101) in the first innings of the series opener in Leeds. On the other hand, Gill had crossed the 70-run mark at the time of writing. Jaiswal and KL Rahul added 91 runs for the first wicket, with the latter amassing 42.
