West Indies cricket legend Vivian Richards has praised Virat Kohli for his resilience and determination, calling him a true great and even “legendary.” After a tough phase in Test cricket, Kohli answered his critics with a match-winning century against Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy.
Kohli had struggled in Tests and ODIs, with poor performances against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia raising concerns. But when India needed him most, he delivered. In a high-pressure game against Pakistan, he played a brilliant unbeaten knock of 100 runs, leading India to victory and proving his ability to perform under pressure.
During a media interaction with India Today for the International Masters League, where he serves as a Governing Council Member, Richards highlighted Kohli’s mental toughness. He praised the Indian star’s ability to perform in crucial moments, emphasising that these traits set him apart from many cricketers. According to Richards, such attributes solidify Kohli’s status as one of the game’s true legends.
Sir Viv Richards praised Virat Kohli’s resilience, highlighting his ability to bounce back from a rough patch. “I believe he has responded to all of us. He wasn’t performing well before these ODIs but worked hard and returned in outstanding form. That truly reflects the character we talk about, and I consider him among the greats and legends,” Richards remarked.
He added, “Not every player can rise again after a slump. But his determination, energy, and passion for success set him apart. He fights through tough times and turns them around, so I place him among the best.”
Richards has always admired Kohli’s fearless and aggressive style, believing it makes him a true match-winner. His century against Pakistan strengthened his reputation as one of the best run-chasers in ODIs. Some, including Sanjay Manjrekar, consider his chasing ability better than Sachin Tendulkar’s. By taking charge in a high-pressure chase, Kohli once again proved he thrives when it matters most.
India’s Champions Trophy campaign has already seen two centurions—Shubman Gill against Bangladesh and Kohli against Pakistan. With a semi-final spot secured, their final group-stage match against New Zealand may not impact qualification. However, all eyes will be on Kohli as he looks to maintain his form and build momentum for the knockout stages.
