Honeymoon period won’t last long: Shubman Gill gets a warning from Dada of Indian cricket

Overview:

Gill is now 18 runs short of going past Rahul Dravid’s tally of 602 runs from the 2022 tour of England, the most by an Indian cricketer in the European country.

Shubman Gill has been terrific as an Indian Test captain, but Sourav Ganguly feels that the young skipper would face challenges in the future. The former player said the pressure of captaincy will only grow.

“He has been batting at his best and I am not surprised,” Ganguly said. Gill, who is leading India for the first time in the ongoing Test series against England, has accumulated 585 runs at an average of 146.25, including three centuries, one of which was a double hundred, in two Tests so far.

India registered a 336-run which over England in the second Test, with Gill scoring 269 and 161, which is the highest match aggregate by an Indian batter. Gill is now 18 runs short of going past Rahul Dravid’s tally of 602 runs from the 2022 tour of England, the most by an Indian cricketer in the European country.

Ganguly mentioned that the path is not going to be smooth for Gill. “He has just started as a captain and it is his honeymoon period. But he would be under presure in the next three Tests,” he added.

The new crop has done well after the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin from the longest format of the game.

“India have a talent pool, which comes to the forefront in every generation. “Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Tendulkar, Dravid, Kumble, Kohli, and now Gill, Jaiswal, Akash Deep, Siraj, and Mukesh. Whenever there is a void in any generation, they will come and fill it.”

Ganguly reminded India that the series is not over. “The series is levelled 1-1 and there is a lot to play for in the remaining three matches. India have been playing well, but they will have to start from scratch in the next match,” he concluded.
