Overview:
The 25-year-old Indian captain led from the front, scoring his maiden hundred on England soil. He contributed with the bat, amassing an unbeaten 127 runs on Day 1 of the series opener.
Shubman Gill has become the talk of the town after notching up a hundred in his first innings as Team India’s new Test captain. The 25-year-old scored 127 not out on Day 1 of the series opener against England in Leeds. He batted aggressively against pacers and gave respect to spinner Shoaib Bashir, who bowled wicket to wicket.
Gill came to the crease after the dismissal of Sai Sudharsan and started playing shots from the start. Once he was set, there was no stopping him as he continued to dominate the bowlers. Former India pacer RP Singh heaped massive praise on the young leader and highlighted his dominance in the middle.
Gill has stitched two 100-plus partnerships with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant. The opener hit a century while the wicket-keeper batter amassed an unbeaten 65 in what was a perfect day for the visiting team.
“I am made for captaincy, I will score runs as well. Shubman Gill showed his class, and he was magnificent with the bat. He ticked all the boxes on Day 1 of the match,” RP Singh said.
For England, skipper Ben Stokes looked the most threatening bowler, taking two wickets. He dismissed Sai Sudharsan (0) and Jaiswal (101).
