ICC punishes Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan ahead of semi-final vs South Africa

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan has been reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 stage match against Bangladesh. He was found guilty of violating Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to throwing a ball or any cricket equipment at or near a player in dangerous manner during the international fixture.

The incident happened in the last over of Afghanistan’s innings after Karim Janat refused to take a second run on Rashid’s call. He lost his cool on his teammate and threw the bat in anger, which almost reached the striker’s end.

Janat took a single on the next ball, leaving two balls for his skipper. Rashid hit the last ball of the innings for a six to finish unbeaten on 19 from 10 balls.

Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by 8 runs to qualify for the semi-finals. The match was full of action and rain delays.

Meanwhile, the ICC also added one demerit point to Rashid’s disciplinary record. The sanction was accepted by Rashid and that’s why there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charge was laid down by the on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Langton Rusere, third umpire Adrian Holdstock, and fourth umpire Ahsan Raza.

Richie Richardson of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees proposed the sanction, which the player accepted.
