KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan cricketers were docked 5% of their match fees for a slow over rate against New Zealand during the opening game of the Champions Trophy.
Pakistan was one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration as New Zealand won by 60 runs in the Group A game on Wednesday, the ICC said on Thursday.
Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan pleaded guilty to the offence, but no formal hearing was required thereafter, the ICC added. Chasing 321 runs, the Men in Green were bowled out for 260 runs. Tom Latham was named the Player of the Match for scoring a hundred. Will Young also amassed a century with Glenn Phillips going berserk after the bowlers.
Chasing 321 runs, Pakistan were never in the game because of the regular fall of wickets. Babar Azam scored one of the slowest fifties and was slammed for wasting balls. Pakistan will have to defeat India on February to stand a chance of playing in the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
