India’s pace spearhead, Mohammed Shami, sidelined since the ODI World Cup due to an ankle injury, sheds light on his aspirations for the upcoming T20 World Cup in West Indies and the United States. The tournament kicks off with India facing Ireland on June 5 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in the US.
Having missed the recent Test series against South Africa and being absent from the squad for the initial two Tests against England, Shami may make a return for the last three Tests. However, his focus lies on the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a crucial platform for his comeback.
Shami, optimistic about the future, emphasizes the importance of performance in the IPL as the basis for T20 World Cup selection.
“IPL is ahead, and there’s time. Choose players in good form for the T20 World Cup. Build the team based on the right mix. If I’m doing well, pick me. Who wouldn’t want to play in the World Cup?”, he said.
The ongoing T20I series against Afghanistan serves as India’s final white-ball assignment before the T20 World Cup in June. Shami, along with fellow pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, has been rested for the three-match series. India currently leads the series 2-0, with the final game scheduled in Bengaluru later today.
