Team India captain Rohit Sharma wants to win more matches and trophies in the future, even after lifting the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies. The 37-year-old mentioned his hunger at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards Ceremony, where he was named the Men’s International Cricketer of the Year.
Rohit led Mumbai Indians (MI) to five IPL titles but couldn’t repeat the same success with the Indian team in the final World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup in 2023. However, he finally managed to end India’s ICC trophy drought by leading the national team to success in the T20 World Cup 2024.
“I won five IPL titles as a captain of Mumbai Indians and I am not going to stop as when you taste the success of winning trophies and games, you want to carry on for a long time with the team. We will be gunning for more Cups in the future,” Rohit Sharma said at the awards ceremony.
“We have big tours coming up and things will be challenging for us. It never stops for us. Once you achieve something, you always want more. That is what I will be doing as a captain and player. I am sure that my teammates are thinking the same. There is real excitement among the players and we have played really good cricket in the last two years,” he added.
Rohit will lead India in the Champions Trophy 2025 and the World Test Championship.
“Dravid, Shah and Agarkar helped me”: Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma lauded Rahul Dravid, Jay Shah, and Ajit Agarkar for India’s success in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, calling them three pillars.
“I want to thank my three pillars, Rahul Dravid, Ajit Agarkar, and Jay Shah, for creating an environment where players can feel free and express themselves on the field. These three were instrumental in our journey in the World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. I got a lot of help from them during the event,” Rohit Sharma said.
“Players were clinical in the tournament and it was important for us to celebrate after winning the trophy. We enjoyed the moment and I want to thank the people of our country for celebrating with us,” he added.
Rahul Dravid’s tenure with India ended after the World Cup, with Gautam Gambhir replacing him as head coach. Gambhir’s first assignment was the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, in which India won 3-0. However, the team lost the ODI series.
India will now take on Bangladesh in the two-match Test series.
