Aakash Chopra feels Ruturaj Gaikwad will have to wait for his chance to play for India as Shubman Gill, who is his competition for a berth in the top order, is ahead of him. He said that Gaikwad will not get a place in the India National Cricket Team across formats.
India will play against Bangladesh in the two-Test series starting from September 19 in Chennai. Gill was picked for the first game, but Ruturaj was not considered.
“Ruturaj Gaikwad has a massive fan following, and that’s all right. He looks good while batting. His drives with the straight bat, cut shots and pulls are pleasing to the eyes. Rutu is a technically correct batter,” Aakash Chopra said.a
“However, he has been at the wrong end in the last one-and-a-half years. Shubman Gill is far ahead of him. The Indian captain, coaches and selectors have decided that Shubman Gill is the next skipper and superstar,” he added.
Gill led India in the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. He is also India’s new vice-captain in white-ball cricket.
“There is no spot available for Ruturaj Gaikwad in the Test team”: Aakash Chopra
Aakash Chopra noted that there is no vacant spot for Ruturaj Gaikwad in Test cricket.
“If we talk about Test cricket, other players have done well for the Indian team. There is no vacant place available for Ruturaj Gaikwad. The batting order of the team is set at the moment.”
“India will not play ODI cricket for a long time, and there is no place for Rutu in the T20 squad as well. Despite Virat and Rohit’s retirement, the selectors will go for aggressive batters and not someone like Gaikwad.”
In T20Is, he has amassed 633 runs at an average of 39.56 in 20 innings. Gaikwad has accumulated 115 runs, with an average of 19.17 in six ODIs.
