Jasprit Bumrah has confirmed that he will play the series opener against England at Headingley on June 20. The right-arm pacer said he is ready for the first game and revealed that he will compete in three red-ball contests in the series.
Speaking to Dinesh Karthik on SKY Sports, he mentioned that he is all set to bowl in the Leeds Test, but the rest will depend on the conditions and his physical condition.
“I am looking at playing three Tests. I can’t confirm the exact number, but the opening game is on. We will have to see a lot of things before taking a call. The workload management and the match scenarios. I can manage three Tests comfortably without pressure,” he said.
“However, I can’t say I will only play three Tests. This doesn’t send the right signal. I will try to give my best as a player and contribute as much as possible. Hopefully, I will give my best in all the matches I am going to participate in,” he added.
Bumrah will have to assist Shubman Gill, who was recently appointed Test captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement. After Rohit, Virat Kohli, and R Ashwin’s decision to bid adieu to the longest format, Bumrah is the senior player in the squad.
Bumrah was the front-runner to replace Rohit, but his injury concerns kept him from the top job. He declined the BCCI offer to take up the captain’s armband as the pacer was unsure of his availability for all the Tests. As the 25-year-old prepares to lead the sub-continent team, Bumrah’s presence will be pivotal in guiding the bowling attack against England.
