Former Australia pacer Glenn McGrath has advocated the need to rest Jasprit Bumrah to avoid injuries. He warned that if the Indian pacer continues to play cricket for a long time, he will get injured.
Bumrah was out of cricket for almost a year after injuring his back. The pacer underwent surgery and didn’t play in the IPL 2023 and the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
He returned with the three-match T20I series in Ireland and left a lasting impression in the ICC ODI World Cup.
Due to his bowling action and workload, McGrath feels that Bumrah needs time off from cricket.
“He gives everything while bowling for the country and his franchise team. His last two strides impact his body,” McGrath said during an interaction with the media at the MRF Pace Foundation.
“Bumrah needs an off season because he puts so much into every delivery. With hard effort, he needs a breat. If he keeps playing matches, he will get injured due to the amount of pressure his bowling action has on his body,” he added.
McGrath further said that having an assembly of good right-arm fast bowlers has not made India desperate for the left-arm seamer.
“Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Umesh Yadav have bowled well. Only when they become older, we can think of making a change,” McGrath said.
“Avesh Khan and many other are in the fray to play for India. Having so much good right-ram fast bowlers is the reason why India haven’t looked for the left-arm pacer lately” he added.
