New Delhi: India beat England in the fourth Test to clinch the ongoing five-match series 3-1. The Rohit Sharma-led side were full of fresh faces as several key players missed the series. Virat Kohli missed the tour as he welcomed his second child. Meanwhile, KL Rahul suffered an injury.
However, Shreyas Iyer, who featured in the first two matches was dropped owing to his bad form. He even skipped the Ranji Trophy league games despite BCCI’s order.
The apex board was unhappy with Iyer and Ishan, who prioritised IPL over Test games and ordered them to report to their state teams for Ranji Trophy matches. However, both players ignored the directive and continued their absence from the domestic circuit.
Recently, there were reports that the board is planning to drop Iyer and Ishan from the central contract. In the latest events, there is news that Iyer has taken a U-turn on his earlier stance amid the risk of losing the contract and is planning to return to the Ranji Trophy during Mumbai’s semi-final match.
Firstly, Iyer reported that he was suffering from an injury. However, the NCA declared him fit. “Yes, (Shreyas) Iyer has confirmed to Mumbai Cricket Association that he is fit now and is available for Mumbai’s semi-final match,” a source told TOI.
Mumbai will take on Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy 2024 semi-final that will commence from March 2.
In the quarter-final between Mumbai and Baroda, the Ajinkya Rahane-led side put 384 runs on the board courtesy of a double century from Musheer Khan. In reply, Baroda were out for 348 runs. Batting second, Mumbai scored 569 runs and Baroda were 121/3 after the end of play on day 5. Since Mumbai had a lead after the first innings, they emerged as the winners.
