‘Not 2023 ODI World Cup final and World Test Championship final’: Rahul Dravid reveals the lowest point of his coaching career

Former India head coach Rahul Dravid revealed the lowest point of his coaching stint with the national team as he rued not clinching a Test series in South Africa. Dravid was appointed India’s head coach ahead of the tour to South Africa in 2021-22.

The visiting team won the first Test by 113 runs and had a great chance of winning their first ever red-ball series in South Africa. However, the Proteas won the next two matches and kept their unbeaten home record intact.

Dravid rued the series loss. “The series defeat against South Africa was the lowest point of my coaching stint with the Indian team. We won the first Test but couldn’t repeat the performance in the next two Tests. We had a good chance to win our first Test series over there but we let it go. Some of the senior players were not available,” Rahul Dravid said on Star Sports.

He further said that the team was close to winning the last two red-ball matches.

“Rohit Sharma was injured, and we were without some senior players. We needed to score big in the third innings to put South Africa out of the games but credit goes to them for making an impressive comeback. That was probably the lowest point of my coaching career with the Indian team,” he added.

India were without Virat Kohli in the second Test as he was injured. KL Rahul was told to lead the team. South Africa won the contest by completing the chase of 240 runs. In the third and final Test, the hosts reached the target of 212 without any fuss, winning the series 2-1. Virat left the Test captaincy after the tour.
