Jason Gillespie is set to be sacked by Pakistan Cricket Board as head coach and replaced by Aaqib Javed across formats. Gillespie is the Test coach and currently coaching the white-ball teams on an interim basis after Gary Kirsten resigned from his post. Aaqib, who is the convenor of the men’s cricket selection committee, will get the responsibility.
As per ESPNcricinfo, the decision could be announced on Monday. The Men in Green will play their third and final T20I against Australia on the same day. The hosts are leading 2-0 and it would be Gillespie’s final contest.
Aaqib was not the PCB’s first choice as the officials wanted Gillespie to coach across formats without any change in his contract until the end of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Pakistan were not ready to increase his financial package, forcing him to say no. PCB refused to keep him in charge of the Test team.
A PCB official said that Gillespie was not spending enough time in Pakistan and the apex body was unhappy. He was explained about it but things didn’t work out. On the other hand, Gillespie refuted the claim, saying he was in Pakistan as per his contact. Pakistan’s next home assignment is after two months and the team will now play in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Pakistan will compete in a two-Test series against the West Indies at home in January.
Azhar Mahmood and Saqlain Mushtaq were also considered for the role.
