“Player being chosen for the T20 side based on his Test performance”: Manjrekar slams selectors after announcement of squad for Asia Cup 2025

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has raised concerns about the selectors’ decisions regarding India’s squad for the 2025 Asia Cup. The tournament is set to kick off on 9th September, with India placed in Group A alongside the UAE, Pakistan, and Oman. On Tuesday, 19th August, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed the 15-player squad during a press conference in Mumbai.

Following the announcement, various experts have raised concerns over the exclusion of Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Mohammed Siraj. On Saturday, 23rd August, Sanjay Manjrekar posted a video on Instagram where he criticised the selectors for picking players based on their performances in different formats, rather than selecting those who have consistently excelled in the specific format.

“I’ve noticed this trend over the years, not just recently. Selectors often pick a player based on their success in one format and then slot them into another format. When I see a player being chosen for the T20 side based on his Test performance, I can’t help but feel it lacks any cricketing logic. It simply doesn’t add up.”

Washington Sundar, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Prasidh Krishna, and Dhruv Jurel are in the reserve category.
