R Ashwin differs from Sunil Gavaskar, urges Rishabh Pant not to perform front flip celebration

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has urged Rishabh Pant to refrain from performing a somersault after scoring a hundred. The wicket-keeper batter amassed two centuries in the first Test against England in Leeds. He celebrated the first ton with his trademark front flip celebration. However, the southpaw refused to repeat his style in the second innings despite legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar requesting him from the stands.

Ashwin said that Pant has nothing to prove and he should not go for that kind of celebration.

“Please don’t go for that front flip. In Test, your body gets tired unlike the Indian Premier League where you will not face more than 50-60 balls. He is the top batter in the Indian Test Cricket Team and has nothing to prove,” R Ashwin said.

He is the second wicket-keeper in cricket history to hit twin hundreds in a Test match after Andy Flower.

Pant had pulled off a somersault after scoring a hundred for Lucknow Super Giants in their last match of IPL 2025.

He recorded 134 and 118 across two innings. Pant spoke to Cheteshwar Pujara about his celebration style.

“I have been doing it since a long time. I took part in gymnastics during school,” he said.

“If I get up in the middle of the night, I can do a sommersault. After my car accident, I had to work harder to perform it again. However, it is easy for me again,” he added.
