Rashid Khan scripts history in T20 cricket, surpasses former player of Chennai Super Kings

Rashid Khan, widely regarded as one of the most influential bowlers in T20 cricket, has now reached the pinnacle of the format by becoming its highest wicket-taker. The 26-year-old Afghanistan wrist spinner surpassed Dwayne Bravo’s record of 631 wickets when he dismissed Dunith Wellalage during the SA20 Qualifier 1 against Paarl Royals on Tuesday.

“It’s an incredible accomplishment,” Rashid remarked after his team’s victory. “I never imagined reaching this point. If you’d asked me 10 years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it. To represent Afghanistan at this level and be at the top is a matter of great pride. Dwayne Bravo has always been one of the finest T20 bowlers, so to surpass him is truly an honor. I’m excited to keep pushing forward.”

Rashid’s T20 journey began in October 2015 when he made his debut as a teenager. Since then, he has established himself as a dominant force in various global leagues, including the IPL, PSL, CPL, BPL, and The Hundred. As he nears 500 career matches, his impact on the format is undeniable.

Known for his ability to bowl with speed and an air of mystery, Rashid has consistently troubled batters. His variations in turn make it difficult for opponents to judge his deliveries, often forcing them to play cautiously rather than attack.

Over the years, Rashid has also evolved into a versatile all-rounder. His powerful hitting makes him a threat in the lower order, with his signature “snake shot”—a flicked yorker powered by impressive wrist strength—becoming a hallmark of his batting style.

Rashid’s all-round skills were on full display during the IPL 2018 playoffs, where he blasted 34 runs off 10 balls for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He then followed up by defending the total with a brilliant 3 for 19 and two catches. Acknowledging his game-changing impact, Gujarat Titans retained him for INR 15 crore (approx. USD 1.8 million) in a show of confidence.
