“Rohit Sharma is cool and doesn’t get angry that often”: Ex-cricketer on Indian captain abusing Gill for run out mixup

India captain Rohit Sharma abused Shubman Gill when the latter’s mistake proved costly. Rohit was run-out without scoring a run in the first T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali. Gill should have listen to his batting partner instead of watching the ball.

Rohit was furious as single was always on and the senior player was running towards the danger end. Gill didn’t even look at Rohit and the two batters were found standing at the non-striker’s end. Rohit was livid and started scolding Gill while heading back to the dressing room.

“It was an easy run,” said former India cricketer Rohan Gavaskar on Cricbuzz.

“Rohit doesn’t get angry that often and he is cool, calm and collective. As a young player, you have to trust your captain. Gill knew that he will have to play a special innings after getting his skipper run out,” he added.

Gill played some good shots but in Rohan Gavaskar’s opinion, he was trying too hard to make up for his mistake. Gill tried to hit Mujeeb Ur Rahman for a big shot but missed the ball completely and was out stumped for 23 off 12 balls.

Gavaskar said that Rohit played the shot towards the mid-off region and it was striker’s call.

“The ball went behind the non-striker and as a non-striker you have to trust your batting partner. The fielder at mid-off and mid-on region will target the bowler’s end. The striker is running at the danger end,” he added.

“The mistake that Shubman made was that he was following the ball and had no idea where Rohit was until he was standing with him at the non-striker’s end.”

The mistake, however, was not damaging as India won the game by 6 wickets, with Shivam Dube scoring an unbeaten 60 off 40 balls. He was supported by keeper Jitesh Sharma (31 off 20) and the hosts easily chased down the 159-run target.
