“Shreyas Iyer will be a part of Team India in 2026 T20 World Cup”: Former player

Overview:

Chopra felt that Shreyas was treated unfairly. While recognising that there was no opening for him at No. 3 or No. 4 in the batting order, he suggested that the Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain should have been included in the squad.

Former player Aakash Chopra has raised questions over Shreyas Iyer‘s absence from India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Chopra believes the right-handed batter is likely to be part of the Indian team for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The 2025 Asia Cup is scheduled to take place in the UAE from September 9 to 28. On August 19, the selectors announced a 15-member squad for the tournament, with Shreyas Iyer missing out.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, ‘Aakash Chopra,’ the former opener pointed out that Shreyas had done everything possible to deserve a place in the squad. Chopra also speculated that if Iyer continues his impressive form in ODIs, he could be part of the Indian National Cricket Team for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

“Shreyas Iyer’s absence is a major story. What more does he have to do? He had a 600-plus run season in the IPL, led his team to the final, scored runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, played in the Ranji Trophy, and won the Champions Trophy. That’s all he can do as a human being,” Chopra said

“This is the Asia Cup squad. Don’t associate it with the World Cup, as there are still 15 T20Is to be played after this. A lot can change in those 15 matches. If Shreyas Iyer continues to score runs in ODIs, he will make the cut. I strongly believe that Shreyas Iyer will be a part of India‘s T20 World Cup squad,” he added.

Despite this, Chopra felt that Shreyas was treated unfairly. While recognising that there was no opening for him at No. 3 or No. 4 in the batting order, he suggested that the Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain should have been included in the squad.
