Former Australian player Greg Chappell lauded Shubman Gill for his captaincy and batting performance in the first Test against England. Gill was appointed the Test skipper after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the format, and Jasprit Bumrah refused to take the captain’s armband. The 25-year-old scored a hundred in the first innings, but it went in vain as the hosts secured a five-wicket win in Leeds.
“It was a good Test match. India didn’t win the contest, but there were a lot of good things for the team,” Greg Chappell said.
“Shubman Gill had a great start as a captain and as a player despite India not being able to cross the finishing line. Batting conditions were the best on the last day of the match. Gill and the team management would have learned what to take forward. Gill will only get better as a leader. I think his start was good. Had the catches been taken and the tail scored runs, the result could have been different,” he added.
The former India head coach also hailed Rishabh Pant, who scored two centuries in the game.
“He reminded me of Adam Gilchrist when I saw him for the first time. He scores runs at a fast rate, which allows the team to win matches. He has reinvented the game and is exciting to watch.”
