India are starting a new phase in Test cricket without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and Ricky Ponting has offered his perspective on the transition, providing both reassurance and insight. With the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the longest format, the focus now shifts to a new generation of leaders. Shubman Gill, who is at the helm, is gearing up for a five-match series against England, set to begin on June 20 at Headingley.
Having closely observed the growth of Indian cricket, Ponting believes that India are in a stronger position.
“Replacing players who have been part of the team for a long time and have vast experience in Test cricket is always tough. However, India have the young talent needed to make this transition swiftly,” Ricky Ponting told The ICC.
Former Australian captain highlighted the consistent flow of talent from India in recent years. “I’ve witnessed it firsthand in the IPL over the past ten years, and we’ve seen players like (Yashasvi) Jaiswal step up to international cricket, making an instant impact,” he added.
Ponting acknowledged that although talent might not be a concern, the true test will lie in coping with the absence of experienced players. “While replacing skill is one thing, which I believe India can manage fairly easily, the experience is the critical factor that will be missing. Despite having a young leader Shubman Gill, they will still have seasoned players KL Rahul and Jasprit,” he mentioned.
“In a rebuilding phase, I think India can manage it better than most other teams,” Ponting concluded.
