Former New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson has shed light on the form of Virat Kohli in Test cricket. He suggested that Kohli doesn’t play for records but to win matches. He felt that the star batter could prove dangerous for Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024.
The five-Test series will be played in Australia starting on November 22. The fans and experts are concerned about Kohli’s dipping numbers as he has managed just two hundred in the longest format since 2019.
“Virat Kohli is not looking for record but to win matches for India at this stage of his career. That is a dangerous sign for Australia because if he is not looking at numbers and is focused on the results, the big scores will come naturally. He knows about the conditions in Australia and will not need time to settle down.
“The key phase of the day is from 30 to 60 overs in Test cricket. If Kohli is there in the middle, he will not let the game slip away. It is about finding gaps and going for singles and doubles. If Australia attacks him, then he can counterattack,” Mike Hesson told Jio Cinema.
In the first Test against Bangladesh, he scored 6 and 17 in Chennai. He then accumulated 47 and an unbeaten 29 in the Kanpur Test. The Australia series will be key for the star batter.
Hesson pointed out that Kohli was in fine form against Bangladesh despite not scoring big and said that he would thrive against New Zealand and Australia.
“He was in good touch against Bangladesh. After playing against New Zealand, he will head to Australia, and the pitches will suit him over there,” he added.
In 25 Test matches against Australia, he scored 2042 runs at an average of 47.48 with eight hundreds.
“He knows the conditions well and will score runs against the Aussies. He will also help the youngster of the team.”
