“Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis will do anything for money”: Rashid Latif

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif took an indirect dig at cricket legends Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis following their sharp criticism of Mohammad Rizwan’s team after Pakistan’s disappointing group-stage exit from the Champions Trophy. As the host nation, Pakistan failed to win a single match in the tournament, ending their campaign early.

Latif previously urged former cricketers, particularly those from the 90s, to step away from Pakistan cricket. On Geo News’ show Harna Mana Hai, he remarked, “It took 17 years for Pakistan to win another World Cup because the 90s players didn’t let Pakistan cricket grow. Keep them away from management and the team, and they will start winning. They have served Pakistan cricket long enough—it’s time for them to step aside.”

He swiped at Akram and Waqar and called them “Dubai ke launde” (Boys from Dubai). Due to their broadcasting commitments, the duo remained in the UAE throughout the Champions Trophy.

“The boys from Dubai have stirred up quite a scene. They seem delighted, showering each other with praise. Throughout their careers, they were always at odds, which took a toll on Pakistan cricket. Fascinating individuals—offer them money, and they’ll do anything,” he remarked.

Following their early exit, Pakistan will return to action later this month with a New Zealand tour featuring five T20Is and three ODIs starting March 16. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has significantly changed the T20I squad, dropping Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam. Salman Agha has been appointed captain in the shortest format, with Shadab Khan as vice-captain. However, the ODI squad remains mostly unchanged, except for the absence of Shaheen Afridi, with Rizwan retaining his role and Babar keeping his place.
