Kapil Dev has refused to doubt Rohit Sharma over his credentials amidst recent flak after India lost the second Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. Rohit has lost four consecutive Test matches as a captain and is under pressure to lead the team to success. Jasprit Bumrah was the skipper in the series opener in Perth, and India defeated the hosts by 295 runs. The result changed the moment Rohit took up the responsibility of leading the side.
Rohit was also below-par with the bat as he scored 3 and 6 across both innings in the pink-ball Test. However, Kapil backed Rohit and mentioned that Rohit doesn’t need to prove anything.
‘He doesn’t need to prove himself as he has been doing a good job for years. Let’s not doubt him. I hope his form comes back as that is important,” Kapil said during the launch of the Vishwa Samudra Open.
The legendary cricketer reminded everyone of Rohit’s success as a skipper in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. “He won us the T20 World Cup and nobody would have dared to ask the qusetion of removing him as a captain. I know he will come back and the team will bounce back,” he added.
Kapil gave a sharp statement on Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy. “It is early to talk about Bumrah leading India in the future. With just one good performance, you can’t call him the best, and with one bad performance, you can’t say he doesn’t deserve the role. Let a player play a lot of cricket before getting the captain’s armband. A player faces a lot of ups and down in a leadership role.”
