In a strategic move aimed at managing player workload, Australia has decided to rest Xavier Bartlett and release Travis Head ahead of the second One Day International (ODI) against West Indies, scheduled to take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
The 25-year-old fast bowler showcased his talent in the recent Big Bash League (BBL), earning him a spot in the national team. Despite delivering an impressive performance in the series opener against West Indies, securing four wickets, and earning the title of Player of the Match, the team management has chosen to carefully manage his workload.
Bartlett will return in the third ODI in Canberra on February 6, while seasoned Josh Hazlewood will replace him in the second match at the SCG. Shedding light on the decision, Bartlett revealed that a prior injury at the beginning of the year impacted his participation in domestic cricket.
“I got injured earlier this year and couldn’t play any domestic cricket, which was really frustrating. However, there’s a silver lining, and you just need to stay dedicated and work hard because such opportunities are rare in cricket,” he said to ESPN Cricinfo.
In a simultaneous development, Australia has released star batter Travis Head from both the ODI and T20I squads, citing workload management. Head is now focusing on the upcoming Test series against New Zealand before gearing up for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Cricket Australia has not yet announced a replacement for Head for the remaining series, but there is anticipation that young talent Jake Fraser-McGurk will make his debut at SCG in Head’s absence.
Left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson, instrumental in Brisbane Heat’s victory in the BBL, will join the national squad for the third ODI but as a cover. The addition of Johnson adds depth to the pace bowling department, providing valuable options for the Australian team.
As the series progresses, the cricketing community will keenly observe the Australian team’s tactical choices in handling players, keeping a close eye on their preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
Australia’s ODI squad: Steve Smith (C), Cameron Green, Xavier Bartlett (rested from second ODI), Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood (second ODI only), Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson (third ODI only), Sean Abbott, Marnus Labuschagne, Lance Morri, Matt Short, Will Sutherland, Adam Zampa
