Yashasvi Jaiswal on the verge of breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record, Needs 283 runs to become…

Yashasvi Jaiswal is the newest Indian cricketer who has become a fan and media favorite in Australia. The southpaw scored 161 runs in the second innings of the series opener in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Although he was dismissed for a duck in his first innings on Australian soil, he returned with a magnificent knock to set up the team’s win by 295 runs.

Jaiswal has been brilliant in the longest format of the game. He scored over 700 runs in the home series against England, including two double hundreds. He again showed his class against Bangladesh in the two-Test series but failed to get going in six innings against New Zealand.

He is the second leading run-getter in the Test format this year after Joe Root. The Indian batter has amassed 1280 runs and is close to breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s Indian record of most runs in a calendar year. Tendulkar scored 1562 runs in 14 red-ball games in 2010, and Jaiswal needs 283 runs to go past the great batter. With three Tests left in 2024, Jaiswal has a fair chance of topping the list currently headed by Sachin.

The overall record for most runs in a calendar year belongs to legendary Pakistan batter Mohammad Yousuf, who scored 1788 runs in 11 Tests in 2006.

KL Rahul and Jaiswal are likely to continue as openers despite Rohit Sharma’s return. The skipper batted at the No.4 slot in the warm-up match against the Australia Prime Minister’s XI to allow the pair to have another go at the opening position before the second Test against Australia, starting on December 6 at the Adelaide.

Jaiswal and Rahul added 201 runs for the opening wicket in the second innings of the Perth Test. KL scored 77 runs and was one of the top performers for the Jasprit Bumrah-led team.
